Radiology Digitizing FAQ

Q.) Are there any HIPAA implications to digitizing analog films to digital images?
A.) The Quinlan Companies’ work to follow all HIPAA regulations throughout our healthcare related processes, and digitizing is just another form of delivering your images to you.

Q.) What is Analog Digitizing?
A.) Analog digitizing is a process of scanning or digitizing radiology analog films or x-rays. When an analog film is requested, the records are pulled and then these films are digitized, encrypted for security, and sent over a secure connection using a VPN to your PACS.

Q.) What are the benefits of your film conversion solutions?
A.) You can manage analog films before, during, and after PACS implementation; view historical studies side by side with new studies when making a diagnosis; and minimize scanning costs by converting only that portion of the analog film inventory that is needed.

Q.) What equipment is necessary?
A.) The equipment is specialty scanning equipment used in medical record imaging. Scanners are built to provide very high-resolution images that can be read by viewing stations connected to your PACS. In addition, a PC workstation is used to manage the image scanning and allow indexing of patient information.

Q.) How big are the images?
A.) DICOM images are typically large – up to several Mbs per image .We can provide the appropriate scanning equipment to handle the large file sizes.

Q.) If I have an emergency request, what is the turn around time to receive the patient's images and will it cost me extra?
A.) An emergency request can be sent within an hour and there will be a slight increase in price per image associated with this emergency request.

Q.) Do I have to convert all my radiology analog films to digital?
A.) You can scan images as needed to create digital files. This will minimize conversion costs by eliminating scanning of films that will never be requested.

Q.) Why should I select The Quinlan Companies to digitize my analog x-ray films?
A.) We have been in business 80 years and use state-of-the-art scanning technology, we are flexible enough to meet your individual needs, and we can provide the services at competitive pricing.

Q.) After the films are digitized can they be stored with The Quinlan Companies?
A.) We can provide a comprehensive per-study storage fee based on your needs.

Q.) My radiology analog films are stored at my facility, how will The Quinlan Companies obtain them?
A.) For 80 years, The Quinlan Companies has provided archiving and record management services. We offer a full range of management services from the initial film jacket removal and transport to our facility, to film destruction after statutory retention times.
